Community Council Urges Support For Campaign
ARBROATH Community Council has urged the people of Arbroath to lend, their full support to the plan to have Arbroath Abbey recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Speaking at Wednesday night`s gathering in the public library, Councillor Alistair Martin, who attended the recent public meeting at Ladyloan Primary School where a steering committee was set up, warned his fellow councillors that the venture was still just "pie in the sky" but that it was vital that everyone should back the plan
He said, It's going to be a long. drawn-out process that could take up to ten years to come to fruition but it would be a good thing for the town if it comes about."
He added that although nothing was set in stone at this early stage he recommended that two members of the community council put their names forward to join the proposed 12-strong steering committee.
Patricia Millar said that she would be happy to be a substitute representative but when no one else was able to be representative she agreed to fulfil that role and Mike Cosans agreed to be her substitute.
Mrs Millar said, “Along with the community council, the public has to get in tow with this. So many people in Arbroath say, ‘we want this and we want that’ but as soon as you ask them for one hour of their time they vanish quicker than snow off a dyke."
